Surely fighting the speeding ticket is the best thing to do because pleading guilty to a speeding ticket in New York gives you no oportunity to get the charges reduced to a non-moving violation. If the charges are reduced to a non-moving violation you will avoid points on your license and increases in insurance rates. If you accumulate too many points your license, your license could be suspended or revoked. It is best to maintain a clean license at all times because the future is unknown.
Just as you would expect, I recommend that you hire a lawyer to represent you on all tickets that are moving violation. I say this because a lawyer is generally familiar with the plea policy of the various cities and towns in New York State and is better position to negotiate a plea in the various jurisdictions. The Town Procecutor will be more likely to offer you a plea that includes the necessity to attend traffic school to get it. If you hire a lawyer you are less likely to have to attend traffic school to get the plea. If at some point in the future you get another ticket that the Prosecutor requires Traffic School, you won't have that option and will have to take a plea to a lesser moving violation that includes points and possible insurance hikes. The bottom line is that hiring the lawyer will save you time and money in the long run.
The benefits of hiring a lawyer usually include: 1) You probably won't have to appear in court (that often takes hours if you appear on your own), 2) You have a better chance of maintaining a clean license, 3) You have a better chance of not having to attend Traffic School (not free by the way), 4) Your insurance rates are less likely to increase, 5) You will probably pay less in fines and surcharges than you would if you appeared on your own, 6) Less hastle.
Generally speaking it will cost about $250.00 for most speading tickets but it depends on the speed and your driving record. Perhaps the better question would be what is the cost if I don't hire a lawyer.
